KOSPI Surge Triggers Five-Minute Trading Curb After Sharp Rebound

South Korea’s main stock market triggered a buy-side sidecar after KOSPI 200 futures rose sharply, briefly suspending program trading as the benchmark index rebounded from the previous session’s steep loss.

South Korea’s main stock market activated a buy-side trading curb on Wednesday after a sharp rebound pushed the benchmark KOSPI up more than 4 percent in morning trading.

The Korea Exchange suspended program trading in KOSPI-listed shares for five minutes at 10:51 a.m. under its sidecar mechanism. The measure was triggered as gains in KOSPI 200 futures met the threshold for intervention, reflecting the speed and scale of the market’s advance.

A buy-side sidecar takes effect when the KOSPI 200 Futures Index rises by at least 5 percent and remains above that level for one minute. The temporary halt is designed to limit the immediate impact of automated program orders during unusually rapid market moves. It does not close the market or halt all trading.

The KOSPI opened 2.05 percent higher and continued climbing through the morning. By 11:02 a.m., the index had gained 247.81 points, or 4.46 percent, to reach 5,800.55. The move marked a forceful reversal from the previous session, when the benchmark fell nearly 4 percent.

The sharp swing came as investors continued to assess concerns about whether heavy spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure would generate sufficient returns. Those profitability concerns had weighed on market sentiment a day earlier before buying returned on Wednesday.

The sidecar activation underscores the scale of recent volatility in Seoul’s equity market. While the mechanism pauses program trading only briefly, its use signals that derivatives-linked movements have crossed a preset threshold intended for exceptional price changes. Trading resumes automatically after the five-minute suspension.

The rebound also returned the KOSPI above the 5,800 level during the morning session. However, the index level reported shortly after 11 a.m. represented an intraday reading rather than a closing result, leaving the final direction and size of Wednesday’s gain dependent on trading through the rest of the session.

For investors, the rapid reversal highlights how quickly sentiment can shift when markets are focused on the costs and expected returns of large-scale AI investment. The exchange’s intervention was procedural rather than a judgment on market value, applying the established futures-based trigger as prices accelerated upward.
