Seoul Stocks Jump at Open as Chip Rally Lifts Market Sentiment

South Korean shares opened sharply higher Wednesday as technology heavyweights advanced, while record-setting gains on the Nasdaq and hopes for easing Middle East tensions supported investor confidence.

South Korean stocks opened sharply higher Wednesday, with major technology companies leading gains as investors took encouragement from a continuing rally in artificial intelligence-related shares and signs that geopolitical pressure in the Middle East could ease.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index rose 136.08 points, or 1.94 percent, to 7,153.99 at the opening bell. The advance placed the market above the 7,100 level in early trading and showed how strongly large technology stocks were influencing the broader index.

The positive opening followed another record close for the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite in the United States. The Nasdaq gained 0.45 percent Tuesday local time, extending its record-setting run as enthusiasm around artificial intelligence-related companies continued to support technology shares.

The wider U.S. market finished with a more mixed tone. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.36 percent, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.06 percent. Even so, the Nasdaq's strength offered a favorable signal for South Korean chipmakers and other technology companies whose shares often respond to changes in global semiconductor demand and investor appetite for AI-linked businesses.

Sentiment was also helped by hopes that tensions in the Middle East may ease. Diplomatic efforts to reduce the conflict contributed to lower oil prices, providing an additional source of relief for investors. South Korea imports most of its energy needs, making shifts in global crude prices an important factor for inflation expectations, corporate costs and the country's trade outlook.

The sharp rise at the open reflected a combination of international market momentum and improving risk appetite rather than a uniform advance across all major global indexes. Investors were weighing the durability of the AI-driven technology rally against lingering uncertainty in other parts of the market.

Attention will remain on whether the early gains can hold through the session. Movements in heavyweight chip shares, foreign investor activity, oil prices and further developments in Middle East diplomacy are likely to shape trading. The opening surge nevertheless marked a strong start for Seoul equities after technology stocks again set the direction for regional market sentiment overall.
