South Korea Welcomes Record 15 Million Foreign Tourists Through August

South Korea received 15.05 million foreign visitors in the first eight months of 2026, reaching the milestone more than a month earlier than last year as tourism spending and regional arrivals also set new highs.

South Korea welcomed a record 15.05 million foreign tourists during the first eight months of 2026, passing the 15 million mark more than a month earlier than it did last year, according to figures released Monday by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization.

The total represented a 21.6 percent increase from the 12.38 million visitors recorded in the same period of 2025. August alone brought 2.25 million arrivals, the highest monthly figure on record. The figures point to a strong expansion of inbound travel as South Korea draws visitors from a wider range of markets.

Tourism-related spending also rose sharply. Foreign visitors made 14 trillion won, or about $10.3 billion, in card transactions connected to tourism from January through August. That was 48.5 percent higher than a year earlier and the largest amount since collection of the data began. Spending therefore grew at more than twice the rate of visitor arrivals, signaling a substantial increase in the economic contribution from inbound tourism.

The gains were not confined to Seoul and its surrounding region. Travelers entering South Korea through regional airports and ports accounted for 27.8 percent of all foreign arrivals, the highest share recorded this year. The increase suggests that a larger portion of overseas visitors are using gateways outside the capital area, potentially spreading tourism activity to more cities and provinces.

Growth was broad across countries and regions, with especially strong gains from Chinese-speaking markets. The number of visitors from China climbed 29 percent from a year earlier to 4.8 million. Arrivals from Taiwan increased 32.2 percent to 1.66 million.

Southeast Asian markets also supplied significant numbers of travelers. South Korea received 454,000 visitors from the Philippines, 407,000 from Vietnam, 295,000 from Indonesia, 243,000 from Singapore and 230,000 from Thailand during the eight-month period.

The combination of record arrivals, faster growth in visitor spending and a larger regional entry share gives the tourism sector several measures of momentum heading into the final months of the year. The data also show that the recovery is being supported by multiple source markets rather than a single country, while regional airports and ports are taking a greater role in handling the increase.
