One person was killed and six others were injured after an explosion and fire tore through a residential villa in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, on Friday afternoon, prompting police and fire authorities to investigate suspected arson.

The incident began after emergency services received a report at about 1:20 p.m. that an intoxicated resident appeared to be pouring gasoline inside a unit on the third floor of the building in Deokgye-dong. An explosion occurred as a responding police officer attempted to inspect the unit, and flames then spread rapidly through the building.

Fire crews brought the blaze under control in approximately 50 minutes. During a search of the damaged residence, responders found a man in his 60s dead inside. Authorities had not publicly identified him beyond his age group in the initial report.

The sudden blast and fire injured four police officers, one firefighter and one resident. The six injured people were not believed to have suffered serious injuries, according to the preliminary account. The number of first responders among the injured underscores the danger faced by crews arriving at a scene where flammable material had reportedly been involved.

Police and fire investigators are concentrating on the possibility that the fire was deliberately set. The report about gasoline and the explosion that followed are central elements of the inquiry, but authorities had not announced a final cause or detailed the precise sequence that led to the ignition.

Investigators are expected to examine the interior of the building and evidence from the affected unit as they work to determine how the explosion began and whether criminal conduct was involved. The initial focus on arson remains an investigative assessment rather than a completed finding.

The incident occurred in Yangju, a city north of Seoul in northern Gyeonggi Province. It left a resident dead, damaged a multiunit home and injured both emergency personnel and a civilian within a short period between the first report and containment of the fire. The case remains at an early stage, and the official investigation will determine whether the initial suspicions are supported by physical evidence. Authorities had not released further information about other occupants or the extent of structural damage in the first public account.
