Busan Opens National Skills Competition for 477 Disabled Participants
Busan is hosting 477 contestants in a four-day national vocational skills competition that also includes a 65-company employment fair and pathways to technical qualifications and international competition.
Busan is hosting South Korea’s 43rd National Skills Competition for Persons with Disabilities from September 15 to 18, bringing 477 contestants together across 41 vocational disciplines.
The four-day event is being held at three venues: BEXCO, Korea Polytechnics’ Busan campus and Busan Mechanical Technical High School. Busan Metropolitan City and the Ministry of Employment and Labor are co-hosting the competition, while the Korea Employment Agency for Persons with Disabilities and the Korea Association for the Employment Security of the Disabled are organizing it.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday at BEXCO, with about 800 participants, officials and guests expected to attend. Organizers say the event is intended to strengthen participants’ vocational abilities and connect their technical skills with quality employment and broader social participation.
The program extends beyond the competition floor. A career and employment fair for people with disabilities will run at BEXCO’s second exhibition hall from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Sixty-five companies are expected to participate, with plans to recruit a total of 225 people.
Two employment-focused side events are also scheduled for Wednesday. A conference will share effective practices from vocational rehabilitation facilities, while a policy forum hosted at the Haeundae Centum Hotel will examine ways to expand employment for people with disabilities.
Medalists in each discipline will receive more than recognition. Gold, silver and bronze winners will be exempted for two years from both the written and practical tests required for the corresponding national technical qualification. They will also become eligible to enter the Korean selection process for the 11th International Abilympics, scheduled to take place in Helsinki, Finland, in May 2027.
The competition matters because it connects demonstrated skill with concrete routes into hiring, qualifications and international competition. The planned recruitment fair gives the event an immediate labor-market dimension, while the qualification exemptions can reduce barriers for medalists seeking to formalize their expertise.
The closing ceremony and awards presentation are scheduled for 11 a.m. on September 18. Organizers will then hand the competition flag to Daegu, the next host city.
