Samsung E&A Posts Sharp Third-Quarter Profit Growth as Sales Rise 45.8%

Samsung E&A reported a 37.7% increase in third-quarter net profit and a 183.6% surge in operating profit, with all three headline results exceeding or reinforcing strong growth at the engineering and construction company.

Samsung E&A reported a strong third-quarter performance on Thursday, with net profit rising 37.7% from a year earlier as sales and operating profit also recorded substantial gains.

The engineering and construction company posted net profit of 216.7 billion won, equivalent to about $163.2 million, for the July-to-September period. The result exceeded the market consensus of 206.4 billion won compiled by Yonhap Infomax by roughly 10.3 billion won, or about 5%.

Operating profit climbed 183.6% year on year to 500.6 billion won, marking the largest percentage increase among the three headline earnings measures disclosed in the company’s regulatory filing. Revenue advanced 45.8% to 2.91 trillion won.

The figures indicate that profitability expanded considerably faster than sales during the quarter. Based on the reported growth rates, Samsung E&A generated approximately 176.5 billion won in operating profit and about 2 trillion won in sales in the corresponding quarter a year earlier. The latest results therefore represent an increase of more than 324 billion won in operating profit and roughly 914 billion won in quarterly revenue on a comparable basis.

Net profit in the year-earlier period was approximately 157.4 billion won when calculated from the disclosed annual growth rate. The latest figure implies an increase of about 59.3 billion won. It also came in above analysts’ average forecast, adding a positive earnings surprise to the company’s year-on-year improvement.

Samsung E&A is the engineering and construction arm of Samsung Group. Its quarterly results are closely watched for evidence of project execution, cost management and demand for engineering services. The company’s filing provided the headline financial results but did not detail in the initial report which projects or business segments accounted for the gains.

The scale of the operating-profit increase stands out because it was nearly four times the pace of revenue growth. While the filing confirms a broad improvement across sales, operating profit and net profit, a fuller assessment of the quarter will depend on additional disclosures about margins, order intake, project mix and the sustainability of the earnings increase.

For now, the third-quarter numbers show that Samsung E&A delivered both rapid top-line expansion and a much larger improvement in operating earnings, while net income surpassed the average market estimate.
