South Korean memory chipmaker SK hynix has introduced a Silicon Valley corporate venture capital brand focused on AI computing, data centers, software and optical interconnects, broadening its search for strategic technologies and partners.
South Korean memory chipmaker SK hynix has launched a corporate venture capital brand in Silicon Valley as it seeks a wider role in the global artificial intelligence infrastructure ecosystem.
The company introduced SK hynix Ventures at its first Ventures Day event in Silicon Valley on Thursday. The gathering brought together venture capital firms, startups and SK hynix executives to discuss investment opportunities and potential technology partnerships. Chief Executive Kwak Noh-jung attended alongside investors and companies working in AI computing, data centers and related fields.
The launch gives a new identity and broader mandate to venture investment activities that SK hynix has operated since 2015. Those activities have included direct investments and commitments to funds in semiconductor and emerging technology businesses across the United States, China, Israel and Japan.
SK hynix said returns from its venture portfolio have exceeded twice the cumulative amount invested. The company also said its portfolio relationships have helped it identify suppliers and customers through joint equipment development, proof-of-concept work and other technical collaboration. The return figure was presented by the company and was not accompanied by detailed financial data in the announcement.
Under the new brand, the chipmaker plans to look beyond the discovery of promising technologies and pursue deeper cooperation across the AI supply chain. Target areas include AI computing, data center infrastructure, system software and optical interconnect technology. These fields are increasingly linked as operators seek to improve the performance and energy efficiency of large AI data centers.
The initiative reflects an effort by SK hynix to use strategic investment alongside its core memory business. Rather than limiting its role to financing startups, the company aims to connect investment targets with its own technical capabilities, supply chain and customer network. That approach could give SK hynix earlier access to technologies that influence how future AI systems are designed and operated.
Participants at the launch event discussed developments in computing, memory systems, software and optical technologies. Optical interconnects are among the areas attracting industry attention because they may help move data more efficiently within increasingly large computing systems.
Kwak said competitiveness in the AI era depends not only on securing innovative technology quickly, but also on the ability of customers, partners and startups to create value together. He said SK hynix Ventures would support promising companies and pursue strategic investment and technology cooperation aimed at shaping future AI infrastructure.
The launch does not by itself disclose a new fund size, individual investment targets or a timetable for specific deals. Its immediate significance is strategic: SK hynix is formalizing its Silicon Valley venture presence and widening the range of businesses it may back as competition in AI hardware and infrastructure intensifies.
