LG Display Reports 755.6 Billion Won Third-Quarter Net Profit

LG Display posted a sharp increase in third-quarter net profit even as revenue and operating profit declined, with operating earnings exceeding the market estimate.

LG Display reported net income of 755.6 billion won, or about $571.1 million, for the third quarter, marking a dramatic increase from the same period a year earlier. The South Korean display maker said the result represented a 60,496.2 percent year-on-year rise.

The surge in net income came despite weaker results in the company’s core operating figures. Operating profit stood at 250.6 billion won for the quarter, down from 431 billion won a year earlier. Revenue declined 9.8 percent year on year to 6.27 trillion won.

The contrast between the sharp increase in net income and the declines in revenue and operating profit indicates that factors outside ordinary operating performance had a substantial effect on the bottom line. It also reflects the unusually low comparison base for net income in the same quarter last year. The earnings report did not provide a detailed breakdown of those factors.

LG Display’s operating result nevertheless came in well above market expectations. The 250.6 billion won operating profit was 40.9 percent higher than the average estimate compiled by Yonhap Infomax. No consensus estimate for net income was available.

The results offer a mixed picture for one of the world’s major display manufacturers. The company remained profitable at the operating level and exceeded analysts’ expectations, but lower sales and a year-on-year decline in operating profit point to continued pressure on its underlying business. For investors, the composition of the net profit increase will be important in assessing how much of the improvement can be sustained in future quarters.

LG Display is affiliated with LG Electronics and supplies display panels across consumer electronics markets. Its quarterly performance is closely watched as an indicator of demand conditions and profitability in the global display industry, where suppliers face shifts in product mix, customer orders and pricing.

The company disclosed the figures in a regulatory filing on Thursday. The earnings release puts attention on whether LG Display can convert its better-than-expected operating result into stronger sales momentum while maintaining profitability. Further details from the company may clarify the drivers behind the large net income gain and its outlook for the remainder of the year.
