Hyundai Group Chair Reappointed as North Chungcheong Honorary Governor
Hyundai Group Chair Hyun Jeong-eun will continue advising North Chungcheong Province, extending a partnership built around Hyundai Elevator’s Chungju campus, local employment and strategic-industry development.
Hyundai Group Chair Hyun Jeong-eun has been reappointed as honorary governor of North Chungcheong Province, extending an advisory relationship that began in 2020 and reflects the group’s expanding industrial and community ties to the region.
North Chungcheong Gov. Shin Yong-han presented Hyun with an appointment plaque at a ceremony held Friday at Banyan Tree Club & Spa Seoul, Hyundai Group said Monday. The honorary role recognizes contributions to regional development and includes advising the provincial government on policy and supporting local initiatives.
The relationship is anchored by Hyundai Elevator, Hyundai Group’s flagship affiliate. In 2019, the company decided to relocate its headquarters and production operations to Chungju, a city in North Chungcheong Province. That move led to the opening of the 172,759-square-meter Chungju Smart Campus in 2022. The complex consolidated Hyundai Elevator’s headquarters, research and development center and smart factory at one site.
The company added the Hyundai Asan Tower last year. Standing 250 meters tall, the facility is used to test elevator systems and reinforces Chungju’s role in the company’s technology development and manufacturing operations.
Hyundai Elevator’s regional involvement has extended beyond physical investment. It supports Orurak, a choir for people with disabilities, and operates an industry-linked training program with Chungju Technical High School. The program connects vocational education with local industrial needs and offers another channel for the company to contribute to employment and skills development in the area.
The company has also directed proceeds from Ellis, its in-house cafe, to a provincial welfare center serving people with disabilities. The donation was made last year as part of Hyundai Elevator’s community support activities.
Shin said he hoped Hyun would continue helping North Chungcheong advance its semiconductor, secondary battery and biotechnology sectors. Those industries are central to the province’s efforts to strengthen its manufacturing base and attract future-oriented investment.
Hyun described the relationship between Hyundai Group and North Chungcheong as a partnership growing alongside the local community. She said the group would continue contributing to the province’s future development through cooperation. Her renewed appointment gives the provincial government a continuing link to a major corporate group whose principal elevator business has established a significant operational base in Chungju.
