Hyundai Motor to Direct 20% of $15.5 Billion India Investment to AI and New Businesses

Hyundai Motor Group plans to commit about one-fifth of its $15.5 billion India investment program to artificial intelligence, startups and other new businesses as it expands production and electrified vehicle offerings through 2032.

Hyundai Motor Group plans to direct about 20 percent of a $15.5 billion investment program in India toward artificial intelligence, startups and other new businesses, signaling that its expansion in the country will extend beyond conventional vehicle manufacturing.

Vice Chairman Jang Jae-hoon outlined the allocation after the South Korean automotive group announced the seven-year investment plan, which runs through 2032, alongside the inauguration of Hyundai Motor's new factory in Pune in western India.

Jang said about 60 percent of the total would be used to upgrade existing facilities and increase production capacity. Another 20 percent would support emerging business areas, including AI, ventures and startups. The breakdown places technology development and new commercial opportunities alongside a major expansion of Hyundai's established manufacturing base.

The Pune plant gives Hyundai Motor three production facilities in India. Together, the sites have annual capacity of nearly 1 million vehicles, strengthening the company's ability to serve one of the world's largest and most competitive car markets.

Hyundai also plans to broaden its product lineup. The automaker intends to introduce 20 internal-combustion vehicle variants and six electric and hybrid variants in India by 2030. Chief Executive Officer Jose Munoz said the company aims for environmentally friendly vehicles, including electric, hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell models, to account for roughly half of its sales by that year.

The strategy combines near-term production growth with a longer-term push into cleaner mobility and digital capabilities. Upgrading plants and adding capacity could help Hyundai respond to rising demand, while investment in AI and startups could support areas ranging from manufacturing efficiency to vehicle technology and mobility services. The company did not provide a detailed project-by-project breakdown for the new-business portion.

Hyundai Motor and affiliate Kia sold a combined 852,164 vehicles in India last year. Their 18.7 percent share of the passenger vehicle market placed them second behind Maruti Suzuki India. That position gives the Korean group a substantial platform, but also leaves it competing against a dominant market leader and other global and Indian manufacturers expanding their electric offerings.

The investment plan underscores India's growing importance to Hyundai as both a manufacturing center and a consumer market. By reserving a significant share of the program for AI and startup-related activity, the group is seeking to pair its industrial scale with new technologies as the auto industry shifts toward electrification, software and more automated production.
