South Korean Women Win Asian Games Compound Archery Bronze by One Point
Park Ye-rin, Kang Yeon-seo and Park Jung-yoon defeated Chinese Taipei 229-228 in the women's compound archery team bronze-medal match after a one-point semifinal loss to India.
South Korea secured the bronze medal in the women’s compound archery team event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Wednesday, defeating Chinese Taipei 229-228 in a contest decided by the final arrow.
Park Ye-rin, Kang Yeon-seo and Park Jung-yoon represented South Korea at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square in Okazaki, roughly 50 kilometers southeast of Nagoya, the Games’ main host city. Their opponents were Chen Yi-Hsuan, Chen Fang-Yi and Huang I-Jou.
The Korean trio established a narrow lead immediately, posting a perfect 60 in the opening end while Chinese Taipei scored 59. Both teams then recorded 58 points in the second end, leaving South Korea ahead by one at the halfway mark. The margin disappeared in the third end, when Chinese Taipei outscored South Korea 56-55 and tied the overall contest at 173-173.
South Korea shot first in the fourth and final end and completed its 24 arrows with a total of 229 points. That left Huang with the last shot and the result in her hands: a 10 would have given Chinese Taipei the bronze, while a 9 would have forced a shoot-off. Her arrow landed for an 8, confirming South Korea’s one-point victory.
Compound archery is contested over 50 meters, compared with 70 meters in recurve. Athletes use bows equipped with mechanical release aids and magnified sights, making high scores common and leaving little room for error. In the team format, each of three archers shoots two arrows per end. Four ends produce 24 arrows for each team and a maximum possible score of 240.
The bronze-medal result followed an equally tight semifinal earlier Wednesday. South Korea lost 234-233 to defending champion India and was sent into the third-place match. India later defeated China 238-234 in the final to retain the women’s team title.
India had swept all five compound archery gold medals at the 2023 Asian Games, winning the men’s and women’s individual and team competitions as well as the mixed team event. South Korea’s bronze came on the first day of archery medal competition at the Aichi-Nagoya Games and provided an immediate podium finish after the disappointment of the semifinal defeat.
