Suspect Arrested After Woman Under Police Protection Killed in Jeju
Police in Jeju apprehended a man in his 60s after a woman who had previously reported stalking and dating violence was fatally stabbed outside a hotel. Investigators plan to seek a formal arrest warrant.
Police on Jeju Island apprehended a man in his 60s on Monday in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman who had been placed under police protection after reporting stalking and dating violence.
The Jeju Seobu Police Station placed the man under emergency arrest several hours after the attack. He is suspected of stabbing the woman, who was in her 40s, outside a hotel in Jeju at 1:38 a.m. The victim died from her injuries.
During questioning, the suspect reportedly told investigators that the woman was a former romantic partner. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing and plan to request a warrant for his formal arrest. The allegations have not yet been tested in court.
The case has drawn particular attention because the victim had previously contacted police about the suspect. She reported him for stalking in October 2025 and made multiple reports concerning dating violence in May this year.
Police designated the woman as a person requiring protection last month and issued her a smartwatch designed to alert authorities during an emergency. She was reportedly unable to activate the device when the fatal attack occurred.
Despite the earlier reports, authorities had not obtained a restraining order against the suspect. Police said the prior reports had not led to cases being formally filed, and no such order had therefore been issued.
The sequence of events leaves investigators to reconstruct both the immediate circumstances of the attack and the history of contact between the suspect and the victim. The previous reports, the protective designation and the emergency device are central elements in the known timeline.
The emergency arrest allowed police to take the suspect into custody shortly after the killing while they gathered additional evidence. A formal arrest warrant, if sought and granted, would permit authorities to continue holding him as the criminal investigation proceeds.
The incident occurred on Jeju, South Korea’s southern resort island. The investigation is being handled by the Jeju Seobu Police Station, which is expected to determine the precise sequence leading to the stabbing and prepare its warrant application after further questioning.
For now, police have identified the man only by his age group and have described the relationship based on his account during questioning. The woman’s identity has not been made public in the report.
