Police Investigate Alleged Racist Abuse of South Korea Forward Eom Ji-sung

An English Championship match was halted for about six minutes after alleged racist abuse was directed at Swansea City’s South Korean forward Eom Ji-sung, with police reviewing CCTV footage.

An English Championship match between Swansea City and Millwall was temporarily halted after alleged racist abuse was directed at South Korean forward Eom Ji-sung, prompting a police investigation and condemnations from both clubs.

The incident occurred during the second half of Tuesday’s match at The Den in London. Eom, who was named among Swansea’s substitutes but did not enter the game, was warming up with a teammate near the touchline when the allegation was reported.

The referee stopped play in the 65th minute with the score at 0-0. He consulted the fourth official and spoke with the managers of both teams as officials responded to the report. An announcement inside the stadium informed spectators that racist chanting had been reported, while a message on the stadium screen urged fans to report hate speech. Police were reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to identify anyone responsible.

Play resumed after a delay of about six minutes. Swansea went on to win 1-0, raising its total to 23 points from seven wins, two draws and one loss and keeping the club at the top of the league table.

Swansea said it condemned all forms of discrimination and stressed that such behavior had no place in football or society. Millwall also said it operated a zero-tolerance policy and would take the strongest possible action against anyone found responsible.

Swansea manager Vitor Matos said after the match that the stoppage followed racist abuse aimed at Eom. He described the situation as unacceptable and said the club would support the South Korean player.

The investigation will determine whether an offense occurred and who may have been involved. The allegation adds a serious off-field dimension to a match that otherwise strengthened Swansea’s position at the top of the Championship.

Eom recently returned to club duty after helping South Korea win a fourth consecutive men’s football gold medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. He recorded four goals and four assists during the tournament and scored the winner in South Korea’s 1-0 victory over Japan in the final. His performance made him one of the prominent players in the national team’s successful campaign.
