Tving Returns to Top of Korea’s Streaming App Installation Rankings
Tving recorded 814,483 new Android and iOS app installations in September, rising 43.8 percent from August and reclaiming first place among streaming platforms after three months.
South Korean streaming platform Tving returned to the top of the country’s video streaming app installation rankings in September, showing a sharp rebound in consumer downloads despite continued attention surrounding a major personal data breach.
Tving recorded 814,483 new installations across Android and iOS devices during the month, according to findings from Mobile Index, the mobile analytics platform operated by IGAWorks. The September figure was a monthly record and represented a 43.8 percent increase from 566,538 installations in August.
The surge placed Tving first among streaming applications for the first time in three months. It also marked the second consecutive monthly rise in new installations, indicating that download momentum strengthened after a steep decline earlier in the summer.
The platform had previously led the rankings in June, when it registered 451,491 installations. That was also the month in which the data breach was first disclosed. New installations subsequently fell 24.6 percent to 340,409 in July as concerns over the incident grew, pushing Tving down to sixth place.
September’s total was more than double the July level and substantially above the June figure. The movement from first place in June to sixth in July and back to first in September illustrates how quickly app-installation rankings can change in Korea’s competitive streaming market. It also shows that the immediate decline following disclosure of the breach did not prevent Tving from attracting a much larger number of new downloads two months later.
The installation figures measure newly installed applications rather than subscriptions, active users, viewing time or revenue. They therefore provide a focused indicator of consumer acquisition activity, not a complete measure of the platform’s financial performance or audience engagement. Even so, a monthly record in downloads can expand the pool of users that a streaming service may seek to convert into regular viewers or paying customers.
For Tving, the latest ranking combines a clear recovery in app acquisition with the continuing business challenge created by the breach controversy. The September result signals renewed consumer interest at the installation stage, while the longer-term commercial impact will depend on whether those downloads translate into sustained use and whether the platform can maintain user trust. Future installation and usage data will show whether the rebound represents a lasting shift or a temporary surge.
