A British man accused of stabbing a woman at a university in Seoul before leaving South Korea has been arrested in the United Kingdom, Korean police said Saturday.

The Korean National Police Agency said the suspect, a man in his 30s, was detained in Britain on Thursday local time with the cooperation of the UK National Extradition Unit. His arrest came nine days after the alleged attack and moved the case into an international extradition process.

Police allege that the man stabbed a woman in her 20s in the neck at a university in Seoul at about 11:50 a.m. on Sept. 29. The woman suffered minor injuries to her neck. Authorities said the suspect then left South Korea and returned to his home country.

After learning that he had departed, Korean police issued an Interpol Red Notice. Cooperation through Interpol subsequently confirmed that the suspect had entered the United Kingdom. A Korean police liaison officer based there then worked with Britain’s National Extradition Unit to locate and arrest him.

The National Police Agency said it plans to coordinate with South Korea’s Ministry of Justice and other relevant agencies to accelerate the suspect’s extradition. The arrest itself does not amount to a return to Korean custody, and the timing of any transfer will depend on the extradition procedures that follow in Britain.

The case highlights the role of police liaison officers and international alert systems when a suspect crosses borders soon after an alleged crime. An Interpol Red Notice asks law enforcement agencies around the world to locate and provisionally arrest a wanted person pending extradition or similar legal action. It is not, by itself, a determination of guilt.

If the extradition process is completed, Korean investigators would be able to question the suspect directly and continue the domestic criminal investigation. Police have not announced a timetable for his transfer. They also have not disclosed the identities of either the suspect or the injured woman.

For now, the suspect remains accused of the attack. Any criminal liability would have to be established through investigation and judicial proceedings after his return to South Korea.
