Daegu City Kicks Off Major Safety Check of 260,000 Address Facilities

DAEGU – Daegu Metropolitan City has launched a comprehensive inspection of approximately 260,000 address information facilities across the city. Running from late March to late June, this initiative aims to enhance the convenience of the road name address system for residents and proactively prevent safety hazards posed by aging infrastructure.

Address information facilities, which include road name plates, building number plates, and basic number plates, are crucial for guiding people to their destinations by displaying road names and location details. This system, known as ‘Doromyeong-juso’ in Korea, provides addresses based on road names and building numbers, improving navigation efficiency, especially for emergency services. Daegu conducts these thorough inspections annually, recognizing that damaged or missing signs can hinder location identification, while deteriorating facilities risk falling and causing accidents.

This year’s inspection will focus on key areas, including the replacement of 11,694 building number plates that have been pre-identified as old or damaged. Additionally, maintenance will be carried out on 7,017 ‘object address plates’. For international readers, object address plates are a unique feature in Korea where specific addresses are assigned to public infrastructure – such as fire hydrants, emergency bells, or even bus stops – to enable precise location identification for maintenance, public safety, and emergency response, independent of a building’s address.

During the inspection period, any defects or potential hazards discovered will be immediately addressed with repairs or reinforcement. The city will also implement proactive measures to prepare for natural disasters like strong winds and heavy rainfall. Facilities at high risk of collision with moving vehicles will be prioritized for relocation or other necessary adjustments to ensure public safety.

Based on the inspection findings, Daegu City plans to complete all necessary repairs and improvements by the end of this year. Furthermore, new address information facilities will be installed in areas where guidance is currently insufficient, continuously enhancing the overall usability and safety of the city’s address system. Heo Joo-young, Director of Daegu Metropolitan City’s Urban and Housing Bureau, stated, “We expect this intensive inspection to proactively prevent safety incidents related to old facilities and significantly improve the convenience for citizens in finding locations. We are committed to creating a safe and convenient urban environment.”
