Daegu Metropolitan City, a major urban center in South Korea, is set to implement comprehensive traffic flow improvement projects across three persistently congested urban areas. This initiative aims to alleviate chronic bottlenecks, significantly reduce vehicle waiting times, and shorten daily commute durations for its residents.
The targeted sections are Muyeol-ro at the Gomoro junction, Hoguk-ro near the Donghwagyo intersection, and Banyawol-ro at the Yulhagyog East intersection. These specific locations have been identified as problematic due to heavy traffic concentration in particular directions, leading to frequent and prolonged delays for motorists.
Key to these projects is the strategic expansion and re-designation of traffic lanes. On Muyeol-ro, where left-turning vehicles towards Gomoro often cause queues up to 600 meters during peak hours, the city plans to extend the left-turn lane by approximately 90 meters. This work is scheduled for completion by early April this year, expected to cut queue lengths by 50% and delay times by 54%.
Similarly, Hoguk-ro will see the addition of a dedicated right-turn lane at the Donghwagyo intersection to separate vehicles heading into nearby residential areas from straight-through traffic. This project is slated for completion by the end of July, with projections indicating a drastic reduction of up to 90% in vehicle delay times. Banyawol-ro will also receive an additional dedicated right-turn lane to ease congestion caused by conflicting traffic flows, with its completion targeted for the end of October, anticipated to reduce delays and queue lengths by about 35%.
Upon completion of these improvements, Daegu expects a substantial enhancement in overall travel conditions, particularly benefiting residents commuting between the city’s Dong-gu, Buk-gu, and Suseong-gu districts, as well as those traveling to Siji and Gyeongsan. Heo Jun-seok, Director of Daegu Metropolitan City’s Transportation Bureau, emphasized that these projects are citizen-centric and reflect the city’s ongoing commitment to improving daily life by continuously addressing traffic challenges.
