The Ministry of Interior and Safety announced on April 3rd that it has launched an early readiness system to mitigate the impact of natural disasters expected during the upcoming summer season. Chaired by Kim Gwang-yong, Head of the Disaster and Safety Management Headquarters, the ministry convened the first meeting of its ‘Summer Natural Disaster Preparedness Check Task Force’ to review inter-agency preparations.
This proactive measure aims to ensure swift and effective responses to severe weather events such as typhoons and heavy rainfall, which frequently affect the Korean peninsula during the summer months. The primary objective articulated by Minister Yoon Ho-joong and the task force is to achieve “zero human casualties” across the country.
The Ministry of Interior and Safety (행정안전부) is Korea’s central administrative agency responsible for public safety, disaster management, and local administration. Its vital role includes coordinating emergency responses and developing nationwide strategies to protect citizens from various hazards. By activating the preparedness system early, the ministry seeks to enhance coordination among relevant government bodies and local authorities.
During the task force meeting, participating agencies reviewed their current operational plans, resource allocation, and communication protocols. The discussions focused on identifying potential vulnerabilities and strengthening preemptive measures to safeguard communities and critical infrastructure from anticipated summer natural disasters. This early coordination is deemed crucial for minimizing damage and ensuring public safety.
