Seoul Launches Public Design Competition to Transform Urban Spaces

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced a new public design competition, inviting creative minds to submit innovative ideas for enhancing and transforming specific urban locations across the city. This initiative aims to breathe new life into public spaces, fostering a more aesthetically pleasing, functional, and engaging environment for residents and visitors alike.

Titled the “Place-Specific Public Design Contest,” the competition seeks proposals that address unique challenges and opportunities within designated areas. While specific locations will be detailed upon registration, the overarching goal is to encourage designs that reflect Seoul’s dynamic urban landscape, promote sustainability, and enhance community interaction. The contest is open to a wide range of participants, including professional architects, urban planners, designers, students, and design firms, both from Korea and internationally, encouraging a global perspective on urban development.

Participants are encouraged to register online starting October 15, 2023, through the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s official competition portal. The registration period will close on November 10, 2023. Following registration, design proposals, which should include conceptual drawings, detailed plans, and a written explanation of the design philosophy, must be submitted by December 15, 2023. A panel of experts will then review submissions, with winners expected to be announced in early 2024.

The competition offers significant recognition and rewards. Winning designs will receive prize money, with specific amounts to be announced on the official website. More importantly, selected concepts will have the potential for actual implementation, contributing directly to Seoul’s urban fabric and leaving a lasting legacy. This provides a unique opportunity for designers to see their visions become a tangible part of one of the world’s most vibrant cities.

For those interested in participating, all official guidelines, detailed location information, and submission templates can be found on the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s dedicated public design website. Prospective applicants are strongly advised to review the full competition brief to understand all requirements and criteria before submitting their proposals. This contest underscores Seoul’s commitment to leveraging creative design as a tool for urban regeneration and public amenity improvement.
