South Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) has launched an initiative to equip its public officials with artificial intelligence (AI) development skills, aiming to accelerate AI innovation within the ministry’s services.
The “MOEL Vibecoding Education & Hackathon” took place on April 9 at the Osong Convention Center. The program was designed to empower civil servants, even those without prior coding experience, to transform their ideas into functional software solutions. The event garnered significant interest, with 116 teams applying for just 40 available participation spots, highlighting the strong enthusiasm among MOEL staff for AI learning and application.
The training commenced with an “AI Building One-Day Class,” led by Lim Jae-jin, an official from the Labor Administration AI Innovation Division. Lim Jae-jin has previously spearheaded the development of key AI tools within the ministry, such as AI labor law consultation and an AI assistant for labor supervision. Following the class, participants engaged in an intensive hackathon session, utilizing the Vibecoding platform to develop working prototypes within a limited timeframe.
The prototypes created during the hackathon will undergo a peer evaluation process, with outstanding projects selected by Monday, April 13. These top innovations are slated to be showcased to the public on moellab.info, a platform dedicated to the ministry’s AI initiatives. Furthermore, excellent teams will receive financial support for the development and operation of their prototypes, and those demonstrating exceptional long-term performance may be awarded commendations from the Minister.
Kim Su-jin, Director-General of Labor Policy at MOEL, underscored the importance of this program. “To deliver the best employment and labor administrative services to the public, it is crucial that our staff, who best understand field challenges, can skillfully utilize AI,” Kim stated. “Starting with this hackathon, we are committed to continuously cultivating public official developers who will drive our ministry’s AI innovation forward.”
