South Korea Opens Asian Games Men’s Volleyball Campaign With Straight-Sets Win
South Korea defeated the Philippines 3-0 in its opening Pool D match at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with Lim Sung-jin scoring a team-high 13 points.
South Korea began its men’s volleyball campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with a straight-sets victory over the Philippines on Sunday, taking an important first step toward the tournament’s knockout stage.
The national team won 3-0 at Park Arena Komaki in Komaki, Japan, completing the sweep with set scores of 25-16, 27-25 and 25-22. The result gave South Korea its first win in Pool D, where it will also face Chinese Taipei and China.
Outside hitter Lim Sung-jin led South Korea with 13 points. Jeong Han-young and Im Dong-hyeok each added 11, giving coach Issanaye Ramires balanced production across the attack.
South Korea established control in the opening set after moving ahead 11-9. Jeong and Im combined for eight points in the set as the team steadily widened the gap and closed it out 25-16.
The Philippines offered its strongest resistance in the second set. South Korea was unable to finish the set while holding a 22-21 lead and later faced set point at 24-25. Two consecutive Philippine errors reversed the momentum, and South Korea completed the comeback to win 27-25. The narrow escape allowed the team to preserve its straight-sets advantage.
The third set was also competitive. South Korea trailed 14-15 before scoring three straight points to move in front 17-15. With the score at 21-20, a Philippine error and a service ace from Lee Sang-hyeon helped South Korea create the separation needed to finish the match in three sets.
South Korea will play Chinese Taipei on Monday before meeting China on Tuesday. The top two teams from each of the tournament’s four preliminary groups advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals, making every pool-stage result significant.
The win comes as South Korea seeks to restore its place among the Asian Games medalists in men’s volleyball. The country won a medal at 14 consecutive editions of the Games from 1966 through 2018, but that run ended at the 2023 Hangzhou Games, where South Korea finished seventh.
A clean opening victory does not by itself secure a quarterfinal berth, but taking all three sets gives the team an encouraging platform before tougher pool matches. South Korea will now try to carry its balanced scoring and late-set composure into the next two fixtures.
