The Ministry of Interior and Safety (MOIS) in South Korea has announced the final selection of 64 cities, districts, and boroughs across the nation to receive support for the “2026 Smart Welfare and Safety Service Improvement Model Development Support Project.” This initiative aims to foster safer and more livable communities through innovative public-private partnerships at the grassroots level.

Launched as a competitive program, the project empowers local administrative units, known as Eup, Myeon, and Dong (equivalent to towns, townships, and neighborhoods), to develop and implement tailored “smart” solutions. These solutions are designed to enhance various aspects of community welfare and safety, ranging from disaster prevention and public health to elder care and crime prevention, leveraging technology and community engagement.

The selection process involved a rigorous evaluation of proposals from various local governments, focusing on their potential to create tangible improvements in residents’ daily lives. By supporting these 64 localities, the MOIS seeks to establish new models for community-centric services that can be replicated and expanded nationwide, ensuring a higher standard of living and security for all citizens.
