MOLIT Prioritizes Stable Asphalt Supply for Infrastructure

South Korea’s Second Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Hong Ji-sun, has emphasized the critical importance of stable asphalt concrete (ascon) supply management, prioritizing public safety and the livelihoods of citizens. The directive came during a recent meeting held on May 14, 2026, where Vice Minister Hong chaired discussions on the current status of ascon supply and demand across the nation.

Asphalt concrete, commonly referred to as ‘ascon’ in Korea, is a fundamental material used extensively in road construction and maintenance. A consistent and sufficient supply is essential for ensuring the smooth operation of South Korea’s vast road network, directly impacting daily commutes, logistics, and overall national infrastructure. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) oversees these critical aspects of national development, including road policy and management.

During the meeting, which included representatives from five regional land management offices – local branches of MOLIT responsible for overseeing infrastructure projects in their respective areas – Vice Minister Hong urged for proactive measures. These include implementing demand-side management, particularly focusing on construction sites with urgent needs, and securing domestic supplies of ascon to prevent potential shortages. The emphasis was placed on ensuring that essential infrastructure projects are not delayed due to material scarcity.
