Individual taxpayers in Korea are reminded to complete their Global Income Tax and Individual Local Income Tax filings for income earned during the 2025 tax year. The official filing and payment period commenced on May 1, 2026, and concludes on June 1, 2026. It is crucial for all eligible individuals to meet this deadline to avoid potential penalties.
For international residents or those new to the Korean tax system, it’s important to understand the two main components of this filing. The Global Income Tax (종합소득세) is the primary national income tax, encompassing various income sources such as business income, interest, dividends, real estate rental income, and other miscellaneous earnings. This is similar to a federal income tax system in many countries.
Complementing this is the Individual Local Income Tax (개인지방소득세), a separate but related tax levied by local governments (cities and provinces). This local tax is typically calculated as a percentage of your Global Income Tax liability. A critical point highlighted by local authorities, including Incheon Metropolitan City, is that even if you file your Global Income Tax, you must separately file your Individual Local Income Tax. Failure to do so may result in non-filing penalties.
This filing requirement applies to all individuals who earned income in 2025 and are obligated to file a final income tax return. Taxpayers have two primary methods for completing their declarations:
Timely submission of both tax forms is essential to ensure compliance. For any specific inquiries regarding the Individual Local Income Tax, taxpayers are encouraged to contact their respective local municipal or district offices’ tax administration departments. Please ensure both filings are completed by the final deadline of June 1, 2026, to avoid any late payment or non-filing penalties.
