Korean Health Ministry Initiates 2026 Emergency Center Re-designation

The Ministry of Health and Welfare has announced its plan for the re-designation of emergency medical institutions across South Korea for the 2026-2029 period. This crucial initiative aims to ensure the continued high quality and efficiency of the nation’s emergency medical services, in accordance with the Emergency Medical Service Act.

Medical institutions currently operating as, or aspiring to become, designated emergency facilities are eligible to apply. These include various tiers such as Regional Emergency Medical Centers (권역응급의료센터), Local Emergency Medical Centers (지역응급의료센터), Local Emergency Medical Institutions (지역응급의료기관), and Specialized Emergency Medical Centers (전문응급의료센터). Korea’s emergency medical system relies on these structured designations to provide comprehensive and accessible care nationwide, ranging from highly specialized regional hubs to more localized facilities.

Successful applicants will receive a designation valid for three years, from November 1, 2026, to October 31, 2029. The re-designation process is a regular government procedure designed to review performance and ensure that all designated facilities continue to meet stringent operational and quality standards set by the ministry.

The application window and evaluation periods vary depending on the specific type of center:

  • For Regional Emergency Medical Centers: Applications must be submitted between April 15 and May 14, 2026. The evaluation process will follow from May 18 to July 15, 2026.
  • For Specialized Emergency Medical Centers: The application period is from April 15 to July 22, 2026. Evaluations will then take place between May 18 and October 16, 2026.

While this notice provides general timelines, prospective institutions are strongly advised to refer to the comprehensive official announcement (Ministry of Health and Welfare Notice No. 2026-336) for detailed guidelines, required documentation, and specific evaluation criteria. The full details, including application forms and schedules for all categories of emergency medical institutions, are typically available as attached files to the original Korean notice on the Ministry’s website.
