The Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) announced today, April 16, 2026, the selection of institutions that will implement the second round of its 2026 ‘Emergency Room-Based Suicide Attempt Aftercare Program’. This crucial initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance mental health support and prevent suicide re-attempts across the nation.
The ‘Emergency Room-Based Suicide Attempt Aftercare Program’ is designed to provide immediate and continuous support to individuals who have sought medical attention in emergency rooms following a suicide attempt. Recognizing the critical period after such an event, the program connects survivors with essential mental health services, counseling, and social support to facilitate recovery and prevent future attempts. South Korea faces significant challenges regarding mental health and suicide rates, making comprehensive and accessible aftercare programs a national priority.
Following a public call for proposals earlier this year, the MOHW’s Suicide Prevention Policy Division meticulously evaluated applicants to identify qualified organizations capable of delivering high-quality care. The chosen institutions, whose detailed list is available on the Ministry’s official website, will now be responsible for executing the program, ensuring that individuals receive timely and tailored interventions in their recovery journey.
This second round of selections for 2026 underscores the government’s sustained commitment to building a robust support system for those in crisis. By partnering with dedicated institutions, the Ministry aims to strengthen the national safety net for vulnerable individuals and foster a society that prioritizes mental well-being and life preservation.
