South Korea Doubles Funding for Summer Heatwave Preparedness

The Ministry of Interior and Safety (MOIS) announced on April 15, 2026, a significant increase in financial support for local governments to mitigate potential damage from severe summer heatwaves. This proactive measure aims to protect the public as climate change continues to intensify summer temperatures.

For the upcoming summer, MOIS will provide local authorities with 30 billion Korean Won (approximately $22 million USD, based on current exchange rates) for heatwave countermeasures. This allocation represents a 100% increase from the 15 billion Won disbursed last year, underscoring the government’s enhanced commitment to public safety.

The funds are intended to help regional administrations implement various measures, such as establishing cooling shelters, distributing hydration supplies, and raising public awareness about heat-related illnesses. The Ministry, which oversees national disaster management and public safety, emphasizes the importance of early preparation to minimize the health and economic impacts of extreme heat.

Minister Yoon Ho-jung stated that the increased funding reflects the growing urgency to adapt to more frequent and intense heat events. By strengthening financial backing for local governments, the central government aims to ensure a robust and coordinated response across the nation, safeguarding citizens from the adverse effects of soaring summer temperatures.
